1982 – Modification of the Rolling Mill System at Acerías Paz del Río – Colombia
This project was presented in 1983 with the objective of alerting the company's president to the serious energy inefficiencies caused by the lack of integration between the casting system and the rolling mills. The engineering team had not taken into account the significant energy cost savings that could be achieved by properly integrating the continuous casting process with the company's three rolling mills.
At that time, the company was constructing new equipment intended to increase production by substantially enlarging the cross-sectional area of the casting molds. However, according to straightforward engineering calculations, this modification would have resulted in a proportionally greater increase in systematic energy losses. The author supported this conclusion by calculating the weighted average cross-sectional area of the finished products in order to determine the optimum cross section for the continuous casting process.
Although the planned production increase was promoted in the financial markets as a major achievement, together with the simultaneous construction of a steel-cement production plant, this proposal—unexpected and considered untimely by the company's management—was met with widespread opposition from the board of directors, which chose to disregard what the technical evidence clearly demonstrated.
The company continued operating through a prolonged period of economic decline, sustained by government subsidies due to concerns over the potential social consequences of its collapse. Eventually, in 1999, the predicted outcome became a reality: the company ceased operations and its assets were liquidated. In 2006, it was acquired by the Brazilian Votorantim Group, and later, in 2022, ownership passed to the Colombian investment firm Trinity Capital.
As an experimental contribution to Colombia's steel industry, the project sought to adapt worldwide advances in continuous casting technology to the specific constraints of the Latin American market. It also proposed studying the implementation of a variable-section casting system capable of optimizing the production of medium-sized steel plants manufacturing a wide range of steel products.
